The Big Banyan Tree

Big Banyan Tree is a giant 400-year-old Banyan tree in Karnataka and the fourth largest one in the country.
It is located at Ramohalli and named as Dodda Aalada Mara by the locals. It covers 3 acres of land with a large canopy of branches spreading across the whole area. The main root was infected by natural disease but the other roots have grown and appear like many different trees. There is always a cool atmosphere present around the scenic area.
The tree has divine powers. There is a Shiva temple in the middle among the shades of the huge branches of the tree and shelters many families of monkeys and birds in its shade. The soil below the tree is consistent and attracted many academic minds for study and research.
The place is an ideal picnic spot, but few insensible people have carved graffiti spoiling the beauty of the trees. The horticulture department should be extra careful to look after this and protect the tree and takes initiatives to conserve it. Many tourists who come here, pray that all who those who visit the temple, may live equally long and happy life like the tree.
A Word of Caution Monkeys are in plenty, and a few are found to be quite obsese. So, advise you to avoid roaming around with food items, else you may be victim of monkey’s harrassment.
